Cirrus Logic CL-GD5434 / CL-GD5436

The CL-GD5429 was a Super VGA chipset released in 1994. It was the second in Cirrus Logic's new "Alpine" range.

Memory 1 MB, 2 MB or 4 MB
RAMDAC (Internal)
Part # -
See Also CL-GD5428

The CL-GD5434 was part of the "Alpine" family of chips, now with a 64-bit internal memory interface. It only supported 64-bit mode if equipped with 2 MB memory, and was more commonly equipped with only 1 MB. The chipset came with 32bpp True Color support, and also had a 64-bit BitBLT engine. Its architecture supported being used on ISA, VLB and PCI buses. Its core clock ran at 135 MHz with memory speed either 60 MHz (5434) or 80 MHz (5436).

The CL-GD5436 was simply an optimized version of the 5434, adding support for EDO DRAMs thus supporting a faster memory clock. It used what was called 'Packed-24' acceleration.

Competition

1994 was a competitive year in the graphics card market. Tseng Labs had their ET4000/W32P, ATI introduced Mach64, S3 had Vision864 and Vision964, and Number Nine introduced Imagine 128, the world's first 128-bit graphics processor. All were moving to the PCI architecture on brand new Pentium motherboards. Tseng Labs' ET4000/W32P was considered the fastest for DOS performance, with S3's Vision964 and ATI's Mach64 running a close 2nd. There was still a good market for VESA Local Bus cards in 1994, as nearly everyone still had a 486. As such, it was common for graphics card manufacturers to release cards in both VLB and PCI variants (including those based on the CL-GD543x series).
