Competition
Lots of third parties were attempting to compete with the very expensive IBM Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA) board in 1987, adding what they could to differentiate their cards from others, such as providing more graphics and text modes and a faster clock. They would typically be bought by owners of EGA monitors who couldn't afford to move to the new VGA standard.
