Description	: The Indianapolis 500 Track for GP2.  Includes a 3D Pagoda Building, a yard of bricks at the Start/Finish (as in real life), new flag-waving starter, checkered flag podium, new stands (including bi-level stands) on main straight, scoring tower, new Pit Building, museum building, new track vehicles, an attached performance file for Indy speeds, and more.

* Construction *

Known Bugs	: Nothing major, but because of all the graphics, Processor Occupancy is a little high.  However, once you make adjustments to get the speed up (see below), it won't be that noticeable.

* Installation *

To use the new track, you need the NOCDROM utility (you can download this utility from http://gp2.com). Once you have installed NOCDROM, there is a folder created in your GP2 folder called "Circuits". In this folder there are 16 files called F1CT??.dat (where ?? is a number from 01-16). These are the track data files for the 16 circuits in GP2, where F1CT01 is Brazil, F1CT02 is Pacific and so on, up to F1CT16, which is Adelaide.

1.  Create a USA500 folder under your \gamejams folder.  Move all the jad files to this folder with convert.exe and change them to jam files using convert.exe.

2.  Copy F1ct07.dat into your Circuits folder.  Backup the old F1ct07.dat file.  From testing, the fastest slot is 2, followed by 13, 3, 10, 1, 14, 5, 8, 15, 12, 11, 7, 4, 6, 9, and 16.

3.  Start GP2 and select the circuit.

4.  Drive and have fun. :)

You can always find the old files in the CD, but just in case make a backup of the changed files.

* Notes on number of laps

The Indy 500 is a 200-lap race.  However, GP2 does not allow for such a high number.  We used 90 as the number of laps for a real race and tested it in slot 7.  GP2 does strange things with the number of laps when it's a high number.  Depending on which slot you use, you will get different numbers for the actual laps.  The number 90 will only appear if you use slot 7.  The cockpit may not show more than two digits if the number of laps is over 99.  If you use a different slot, the number of laps will vary.

We did limited testing of different settings for 50% and 100% of actual laps for a Quick Race Length.  With the track set to 90 laps, we found the following:

* How to boost speed

Our Indy 500 track file contains the recommended settings for the CC-car. With the Indy track tested in slot 7, maximum speed was about 272 mph in Ace Mode.  Best lap time was about 0:37.500 seconds. You may be able to get a higher speed with changes to other settings if you experiment.  (E-mail us and let us know what the best overall settings are for high speed.)

You will find that the CC-cars tend to slow down in the turns.  This is probably due to the fact that while our track is visually banked in the corners, GP2 does not take banking physics into account.  We think that high sustainable speeds may be possible in GP3 because of its banking features.

* Using Speed.txt for fast speeds

Another way to substantially increase GP2 speed is to raise the BHP to an unrealistic number, around 1500, and import these settings into GP2 through GP2 Edit.  Included with the track file is Speed.txt which has this type of BHP for each of the teams.  Following is the order of teams with drivers for the 2002 CART season as found in Speed.txt:

If you want a different team order and/or driver names, open Speed.txt and make changes as necessary.  Speed.txt uses this format:

If you make changes to Speed.txt, make sure you use the exact format; otherwise, the file won't load in GP2 Edit.

To load Speed.txt into GP2 Edit:
1. Open GP2 Edit.
2. Click on File, Performance, Load.
3. Find Speed.txt and click on Open.
4. Click on Options.
5. Click on Export to Game.
6. Export only the Team Data and Car Settings to GP2.
7. Don't forget to go into the Track Editor and change the Front and Rear Wings to 15; otherwise, the cars will crash a lot in Turn 3!!!

If you want to just use the new BHPs for Indy only, don't save your GP2 Edit file after exporting the settings to GP2.

In Ace mode with about 1500 BHP, speeds should get up to 279+ mph (450 kph) or more on the straightaways in slot 7.  Watch out for a few more crashes, however, especially during the first few laps.  For some reason the CC-cars don't behave very well!!  But that's OK; in real life, there always seem to be crashes on the first few laps anyway.

History --

The 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in 1909 as an automotive testing and competition facility at a time when the burgeoning car industry was thriving in Indiana.  Ray Harroun won the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911 at an average speed of 74.602 mph.

Track dimensions and banking are basically the same as when constructed in 1909.  The original track surface was crushed stone and tar.  After the first series of races caused the track's original crushed stone and tar surface to break up, the Speedway immediately was repaved with 3.2 million bricks in late 1909.  It has been known as the "Brickyard" ever since.  All but the main straight was paved by asphalt by the late 1940's.  The main straight was completely paved following the race in 1961, and the track was completely repaved in 1976, 1988 and again in the fall of 1995.  Most bricks remain in place under the current surface.  The 36-inch "Yard of Bricks" at start/finish line are the only remaining visible bricks.

The track is unique in its configuration, with long straightaways between Turns 2 and 3, as well as Turns 4 and 1.  Shorter straightaways are between Turns 1 and 2, as well as 3 and 4.  Despite its relative lack of banking, it is the site of some of the highest speeds in motorsports, and a legend among race fans and drivers alike the world over. 
 
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has hosted the Indy 500 every year since 1911, except for the war years of 1917-18 and 1942-45.  It has hosted the NASCAR Brickyard 400 in August since 1994 and and the Formula 1 race in September since 2000.  With more than 250,000 permanent seats, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the world's largest seating facility.

There is a nine-hole golf course on the east side of the infield along the straightaway between Turns 2 and 3.  A two-story museum is also in the infield; it is worth a visit because it contains many Indy 500 winning cars and other race cars from the past, plus helmets, photos, etc.
