Introduction
Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain is a World War II combat flight simulation game by Lawrence Holland, released in October 1989 for the Amiga, Atari ST and MS-DOS systems. It was the second game in the trilogy of World War II titles by Lucasfilm Games, the others being Battlehawks 1942 (1988) and Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe (1991). The game was released with a 192-page manual written by Victor Cross, that provided a detailed historical overview of the battle and pilots' perspectives. An expansion pack, Their Finest Missions: Volume One, was released later in the year.
Players can fly either for the German Luftwaffe or the British Royal Air Force in over 80 unique missions.

On the British side, two planes are available: the Spitfire and the Hurricane. For the Germans, there is the fighter Bf 109, the heavy fighter/fighter bomber Bf 110, the infamous Junkers Ju 87 Stuka dive bomber, and the three light/medium bombers Do 17, He 111 and Ju 88.

Besides training missions for every plane, there are several historical combat missions to be flown. In accordance with history, most RAF missions consist of defence assignments - intercepting and destroying German bombers. Most Luftwaffe missions are attack runs - either flying the bomber escort or the bombers themselves. In the heavier planes, not only can the pilot of the plane be controlled, but also the gunner(s), and, in the bombers, the bombardier.

The special Campaign Mode allows one to actually change the historical outcome of the Battle of Britain. On a strategic map, you organize your planes into groups and assign them to missions, one of which must be flown by you. The outcome of your assignments and the missions you personally fly affect those of all others and also the status of the overall campaign. The British side wins by simply surviving for a certain time or by destroying enough German aircraft. The German side wins by destroying enough RAF fighters, either in the air or on the ground.

Also included in the game is a mission builder for designing custom missions, and a film playback option for reviewing recorded flight footage.

        Andy's Recommended Setup
  "
It is important to run BOB on a representative system or it will play too fast. The ideal spec is a fast 286 or slow 386 with 1 MB of memory. The game has no ability to use memory beyond 640 KB, and the ideal amount of free conventional memory is 590 KB. If it dips below this, the game will automatically scale back the in-game sound, or not run at all.

It goes without saying you should play the game in VGA/MCGA or EGA mode all of which provide 320 x 200 in 16 colours. By default, BOB will look for an Ad Lib-compatible sound card and try and send all its music and sounds to that, so you really don't need to do anything to get the most out of this.
An analogue joystick is really essential to get the most out of flying, and a mouse is convenient for navigating around the menus.

Because of the different types of aircraft you can fly in BOB, I recommend reading the manual. This will help guide you when doing a bombing run for the first time; and if you're not bothered about landing your plane after a mission, don't forget you can use the 'Q' key to end the mission - just make sure you're flying over the British Isles (if playing on the RAF side) or continental Europe (if playing on the German side) when you do, or you will either lose the plane or be captured by the enemy. Keep my Keys section handy as a guide."

From where can it be run?
You can play BOB either from floppy disk or installed to the hard disk. To install the game, see 'How To Setup' further down. If you run from floppy disks, you will be prompted to insert various disks depending on your choices (campaign, training missions, etc) - it looks only on the floppy drive letter A: or B:, depending on where you ran the BOB executable:

A number of the game files are duplicated on more than one disk to minimise disk swapping.
The game's performance and graphical detail are related to the amount of free conventional memory you have. The user manual actually recommends CONFIG.SYS has no devices and you run no AUTOEXEC.BAT file! It states that the optimum free memory for 590 KB.

Copy Protection
The game has a subtle form of copy protection. You can play the game, and even begin a mission. At the bottom of the screen, a message will appear stating 'Tune Your Radio. Press 'M'. Before long, the flight will not be able to continue until you have tuned your radio. Pressing 'M' or choosing 'Tune Radio' from the In-Flight Map/Radio screen will display the map and on the right-hand side your are prompted to tune your radio frequency cypher wheel. You will see a shield and a name beneath it.

The copy protection bit on the right of the Map screen

If you have the original game, pull out the Cypher Wheel in your game box and rotate it to show the image on the outside, then rotate the inner wheel to match up with the name underneath. If you don't have the original game, download this PDF and lookup the page that shows the symbol, then check the location. On the PC version of the game, you will see a Cyan, White and Purple box next to the 3 dials (very CGA!) - these are basically the blue, white and red options respectively. You need to both enter the number and set the colour of each of the three numbers according to the code wheel.
Assuming you've entered the correct numbers and colours, the right side of the map screen will show the key for the map, indicating the position of your plane, other planes, your airfield, and more:

The red indicator light in the top-right is now lit (meaning "radio is tuned") - Now we can see where everything is!
How to Setup
There is no installation or configuration program for BOB. To install the game to your hard disk, Lucasfilm Games have provided an INSTALL.BAT batch file. To install to your C: drive, just run INSTALL C: from Disk 1. Note that it will only look for the source files on floppy drive A:, so you cannot install the game from a subdirectory on your hard disk (unless you were to modify the batch file).

To run the game, simply run BOB either from Disk 1, or after installing to your hard disk (default directory is C:\BOB1940). If run with no command-line arguments, you will be prompted for your graphics card before the game starts. You can also run BOB in a specific configuration using the following command-line arguments:
        BOB <graphics selection> <detail level> <audio selection>
        where:
        <graphics selection> is one of:

          - C = CGA graphics (4 colours, 320 x 200 maximum resolution)
- T = Tandy/PCjr graphics
- E = EGA graphics (16 colours, 320 x 200 maximum resolution)
- V = VGA/MCGA graphics (minor graphical enhancements over EGA)
<detail level> is between 0 and 2, 2 being the maximum ground detail and 0 being the least.
        <audio selection> is one of:

          - A = Ad Lib (the default setting if detected)
- I = Internal speaker
So for example, running BOB E 2 A will run the game with EGA graphics at full detail level with an Ad Lib sound card for music and sound effects.

        Problems
Symptom: The game runs too fast.
Cause: You are running it on too-fast a computer - the game is very speed-sensitive, and was really designed for an XT or 80286 PC. The ideal system to run this game on is a fast 286, something 16 MHz or faster, or a slow 386.
Resolution: If you have a 486 or faster, try disabling L1 or L2 cache (or both) in the BIOS and try the game again.

Supporting Documents
The original game came with a 192-page manual which provides not only instructions on how to play the game, but also an historical account of the Battle of Britain in much detail.
  Additional Files, Drivers & Utilities
A single expansion pack was released by Lucasfilm Games in 1990, entitled "Their Finest Missions: Volume 1". Presumably, this meant they had an intention to release other volumes at a later date (though they never did). This expansion included 23 additional missions, a few of which were created by the finalists in Lucasfilm's 1990 competition co-sponsored by Computer Gaming World magazine. Also included is one experienced pilot for each of the aircraft featured in the main game.

Save Games
If you're running the program from floppy disks and wish to save pilot and
crew records, Custom Missions, Campaign Missions, and combat film replays,
you must format a floppy disk before you start the game. This disk must have a volume label of "bobdata." At various times throughout the game, the program will
ask you to insert this "pilot data disk".

If you're running the program from a hard drive, your Combat Records will
automatically be saved in the BOB1940 game directory. Your pilot/crew record are saved in different files based on which side you are fighting on, and what aircraft they are in, as follows:

     | Type of saved file | File Extension | Example |

     | RAF (Spitfire or Hurricane pilot) | .RAF | GINGER.RAF |

     | Bf109 pilot | .109 | LUDWIG.109 |

     | Bf110 pilot | .110 | HANS.110 |

     | Ju87 Stuka pilot | .J87 | KLAUS.J87 |

     | Bomber crews | .BMB | MICHAEL.BMB |

     | Top ten pilots | .TOP | EDWARD.TOP |

     | Custom Missions | .FLT | P109.TOP |

     | Saved Replays | .RPY / .TMP | RP1.TMP, RP2.TMP, ... |

     | Saved Campaign | .BOB | TALLYHO.BOB |

Unfortunately, the game has no way of deleting existing records. The addendum READ.ME file instructs you to use the DOS 'DEL' command to delete files you don't need anymore.

Versions of the game known to exist
To my knowledge there is only a single release of BOB, and that's version 1.0.

     | Version | Date | Comments |

    | Demo | October 1990 | In late October 1990, LucasArts released a demo sampler entitled "Fight for Victory", which contained demos of both Their Finest Hour: Battle of Britain (BOB) and Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe (SWOTL). The BOB demo is non-playable and features a sample of aerial combat action recorded from actual missions. The SWOTL demo is playable. |

     | 1.0 | 2 October 1989 | Initial public release. |

     | ? | 1990 | Their Finest Missions: Volume 1- the only expansion pack officially released for Their Finest Hour: Battle of Britain. Came on a single 3.5" 720 KB floppy disk. |

     | ? | 1993 | LucasArts' Air Combat Classics - a compilation of all three of their WWII flight simulators - Battle Hawks 1942, Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain, and Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. This was a modified version that works better on 486-class systems and no longer requires the code wheel. Their Finest Missions: Volume 1 expansion is also included. Air Combat Classics came on three 3.5" high-density floppies. In some countries this compilation was sold as LucasArts Classic Simulations. |
