nVidia NV1

The first chip from nVidia was the NV1. It combined both traditional 2D graphics acceleration with 3D acceleration.

Unlike other 3D accelerators that formed a 3D image from many interconnected triangles overlaid with a texture map, the NV1 formed polygons with curved edges, thus defining a new set of proprietary GDPs (graphics draw primitives). This method allowed the NV1 to create realistic 3D effects with vastly fewer polygons, resulting in 3D performance that rivalled that of high-end RISC-based graphics workstations.

The NV1's architecture implemented a packet-based system that allowed for the sharing of graphics, audio and video in a shared memory space, including stunning overlay effects such as lighting, transparency and more.

The NV1, while technically a marvel of innovation, was not compatible with DirectX or other APIs that were becoming popular at the time. This resulted in a lack of adoption by most hardware manufacturers, and ended up a commercial failure.
