ATI VGA Wonder 1024D / 1024D XL Plus

The VGA Wonder 1024D was a cost-reduced version of several VGA Wonder models, sold alongside other cost-reduced models like the XL24. They typically lack the bus mouse connector and/or the digital TTL output.

It is based around either the ATi 28800-5 (Revision 5) chip from 1990 (also used on late VGA Wonder+ cards), or the later ATi 28800-6 (Rev.6) chip from early 1992 which was also used on the VGA Wonder XL24. These were ATi's second-generation Wonder graphics chip after the 188xx series used on the original VGA Wonder and VGA Wonder 16 cards.

The cards come with the capability of 1 MB onboard via two banks of 512 KB DRAM chips. Factory 512 KB cards can be upgraded by simply addding four more DRAMs (80ns was typical for these cards).

ATi released a VGA Wonder 1024D XL Plus, which came out of the box with the full 1 MB of video memory. In all other respects it was identical to the 1024D.

No configuration is required for the VGA 1024D or 1024D XL24, with its auto-switching capability. The card came with a utility to force the display mode if necessary.
