The SoundSystem Gold 16/96 was released in mid-1996. Based on the ES1868F from ESS Technology, it was an excellent Sound Blaster Pro compatible.

Terratec's website from 1996 had this to say: "The best-selling TerraTec sound card is now available in a new version with even greater ease of use thanks to complete software configuration (Plug&Play) and significantly improved audio properties: SoundSystem GOLD 16/96! Due to its high compatibility with common operating systems and audio applications (games, music, speech recognition), extremely easy handling and flexible expansion options, the new GOLD 16/96 is particularly suitable for beginners in the PC audio world. Important: Fun without stress - drivers for Windows NT and Warp are included!".

The Gold 16/96 was able to perform recording and playback from 4 kHz up to 44.1 kHz at 8- or 16-bit quality, with simultaneous enhanced full-duplex recording in mono with its dual DMAs. It has a 3D surround mode called VSpace^TM which simulates all-around sound using two speakers.

For expansion you could fit a wavetable card on the WaveBlaster(TM)-compatible header, and there is an IDE header for connection to a CD-ROM drive. Terratec produced their own wavetable card called the Terratec WaveSystem SCW001.

The MIDI interface is compatible with both Creative Labs' Sound Blaster MIDI and MPU-401.

The onboard stereo amplifier output 4 watts per channel, and the card was supplied with a set of passive stereo speakers along with two bundled software tools:

• Steinberg MusicStation - 64-track MIDI sequencer with note printing and professional automatic accompaniment (your own styles can be programmed).
• BestService 'CircleElements SE' - With 100s of loops (DigitalAudio) with which even "non-musicians" can quickly mix complete, professional-sounding pieces
